The largest insurance provider in the UK, Aviva offers a range of investments and insurance options, including private healthcare insurance. The plans offered by Aviva are customizable and include many different options for reducing premiums or saving on those premiums.

Founded through a merger between Commercial Union and General Accident in 1998, and then the merger between CGU and Norwich Union, Aviva was officially launched as a brand in 2002. Currently the top sponsor of UK athletics, Aviva is the world’s fifth-largest insurance group and is best known for its life insurance and pension products. Aviva offers personal healthcare plans among its insurance plans as well.

Healthcare Plans

Aviva healthcare plans are tailor-made to fit your needs and your budget. The basic healthcare plan under Aviva is called the “core cover.” This gives you access to the hospitals on Aviva’s hospital list as well as hospital charges, specialist fees, diagnostic fees and radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The most common conditions not covered under Aviva’s core cover are pre-existing conditions, long-term or chronic conditions, alcohol, drug or solvent abuse and HIV or AIDS.

You can increase your healthcare coverage by paying more each month for complementary treatments including physiotherapy, acupuncture and chiropractic treatment. Once enrolled, your GP can refer you for treatment directly. Dental and optical coverage options are available as well as in or out-patient treatment for psychiatric conditions. You can also increase the number of hospitals available for you to use by paying slightly more each month.

Your final premium is a result of the number of additional items you add to your coverage plan. You can also take advantage of the special offers Aviva offers to bring your premium back down.

Special Offers

To entice new members, Aviva offers quite a few special plans or promotional offers.

3 months free:

For a limited time only Aviva is now offering a 3 months free individual health plan. This offer only applies to the first year of your policy and cannot be combined with any other offer. You must hold your policy for at least 12 months and the current closing date of this offer is December 3rd 2010.

Gym discount:

Aviva offers up to 40 percent off memberships at selected gyms.

A special program of health awareness and monitoring offered by Aviva gives you the tools you need to understand your health now and to make better choices in order to get even healthier over time. By taking advantage of MyHealthCounts, you could also qualify for a 15 percent discount on your next insurance plan renewal.

No Claim discount:

Aviva offers up to 66 percent off the cost of your premiums for not making any claims. This discount can be available from the first day of your service, but will be reduced if you should make a claim. You can also pay slightly more each month on your premium to protect your No Claim discount should you wind up making a claim.

Free children:

If you cover yourself and your oldest child on your Aviva insurance plan, your younger children are all covered on the plan without additional cost.

Limited cover:

If you opt to limit your coverage for out-patient services to either £500 or £1000, you’re able to significantly reduce your monthly premium.

Six week option:

If NHS is able to handle your in-patient or out-patient procedure within six weeks, you will not use your private healthcare plan from Aviva for the treatment. This reduces your premiums while leaving you with coverage for specialists you’ve been referred to by your GP for out-patient tests.

Policy excess:

By paying an amount from £100 to £5,000 once per year when you make a claim, you can reduce your premiums quite a bit. The higher the excess you elect to pay, the lower your premium will be.

Reduced hospital list:

By opting for the reduced hospital list, you can save up to 25 percent of your premiums. The hospitals on the reduced hospital list are primarily private patient units of NHS Trust and Partnership hospitals. If you live in Northern Ireland or Scotland, you can select an even more limited hospital list for a savings of more than 40 percent of your monthly premium.
