<title>LIVERPOOL COMMUNITY GROUPS GET CASH BOOST TO IMPROVE LIVES</title>
<description>
From creating allotments to getting people out and about on woodland walks, Liverpool community groups who want to improve people&amp;rsquo;s wellbeing through environmental projects now have the chance to kick-start their plans with a cash boost.

Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT) is making a total of &amp;pound;100,000 available to groups who can bring health and wellbeing benefits to the local community by using or improving the city&amp;rsquo;s natural environment. The Natural Choices for Health scheme has been developed in partnership with The Mersey Forest as part of the Decade of Health and Wellbeing. Groups can apply for a grant of up to &amp;pound;7,500.

&amp;nbsp;

Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool PCT said: &quot;This is a fantastic opportunity for community groups to make a real difference to not only their immediate environment but also to the health and wellbeing of people within their communities, and it seems extremely appropriate that we&amp;rsquo;re launching it during the first year of 2020 Decade of Health and Wellbeing.

&amp;nbsp;

&quot;Examples of schemes are anything from community food growing to planting trees, or taking over an uncared for area for the benefit of the whole community - we want groups to be as creative as possible and come up with exciting new ideas. This is a wonderful opportunity for communities and we hope to receive applications from as many groups as possible.&quot;

&amp;nbsp;

To meet the criteria community groups must demonstrate that their scheme makes positive use of the natural environment and helps people achieve as many as possible of the five ways to wellbeing, which are:

Connect&amp;hellip;

&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;

Be active&amp;hellip;

&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;

Take notice&amp;hellip;

&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;

Keep learning&amp;hellip;

&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;

Give&amp;hellip;

&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
A simple Expression of Interest must be submitted prior to applications and these must be received by 2nd September 2011.
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
More information about criteria for the scheme and how to apply is available at:
&amp;nbsp;
www.projectdirtliverpool.com/naturalchoices
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
The fund was inspired by the work carried out for Liverpool PCT and Liverpool City Council to develop a green infrastructure strategy for the city. The strategy was prepared by The Mersey Forest with input from many organisations and individuals. Liverpool PCT is working in partnership with The Mersey Forest to deliver this programme.
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;
For more information about the scheme or for advice and guidance please call The Mersey Forest Offices on 01925 816 217.

<title>Everton Park Growing Project</title>
<description>The Friends of Everton Park are busy developing a growing arm as part of their contribution to the regeneration of Everton Park. They have a simple annual plan that underpins their work and ambitions to really engage lots of local residents in gardening, growing and horticulture. The Diggers are partly inspired by Gerard Wynstanley whose claim for land in 1649 was that it should be &amp;ldquo; a common treasury for all&amp;rdquo;. The group is made up of entirely volunteers with the aim of getting neighbours and friends active on the gardening front. The park itself presents innumerable opportunities for a growing programme and among the projects already undertaken include a willow dome, some salad planting , a fence line fill of sunflowers and runner beans and the very beginnings of a community allotment.
&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The plot in question is sited within Faith Primary school and we have made a start with parents on clearing the site of it&amp;rsquo;s brick and concrete and making a start on some late summer planting. We should have pumpkins to share with the school children &amp;nbsp;and slowly a piece of land that can be put to growing use by community groups and schools from across the area. It&amp;rsquo;s all good, activity, outdoors, groups working together and learning a new interest&amp;hellip;.never mind reaping the harvest in due course.
&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Yesterday we planted up the concrete planters that were made as part of the steps and terrace infrastructure as Everton Park was built in the mid 1980&amp;rsquo;s. They have never been planted in all those years since, so the sunflowers and nasturtiums that we hope will grow up form part of that original plan. Everton Park represents lots of &amp;ldquo;unfinished business&amp;rdquo; and something like yesterday&amp;rsquo;s growing initiative plays a part in completing that jigsaw of opportunity that Everton Park presents.We hope to flourish, like our pumpkins in the brick field !&amp;rdquo;</description>

<title>Feeding Liverpool in a World in Energy Crisis: A Transition Liverpool Symposium </title>
<description>Following on from our Be the Change Symposium in 2010, Transition Liverpool will be hosting a one day symposium that will bring together local people, organisations and businesses interested in devleoping and supporting local food projects in Liverpool.&amp;nbsp;
Modern food production relies heavily on fossil fuels and other increasingly scarce resources, for machinery, feedstock, fertiliser and distribution. This symposium will ask how can the city feed itself sustainably and affordably given the expectation that resource supplies are dwindling and becoming increasingly expensive.
The event is a free, open space style workshop that will use a highly participatory process to ensure that attendees are able to explore the key issues that are of most importance to them. The process has been successfully employed across the globe in a wide variety of settings and will ensure that the day will be informative, thought-provoking, energising and inspiring.
Please go to http://feedingliverpool.eventbrite.com/ for more information and to book tickets

In May, Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT) announced that there was &amp;pound;150,000 worth of funding to be awarded to organisations which could develop a project to reinforce the five themes of the Decade of Health and Wellbeing which are:

Connect&amp;hellip;
Be active&amp;hellip;
Take notice&amp;hellip;
Keep learning&amp;hellip;
Give&amp;hellip;

&amp;nbsp;
Following a competitive application process, 34 not-for-profit groups who are involved in arts and cultural activities have been selected to benefit from the grant.&amp;nbsp; These include:
&amp;nbsp;

Anthony Walker Foundation - Spray it, Don&amp;rsquo;t Say it

This project aims to engage with young people, encouraging them to express themselves through the art of graffiti with the help of a mobile canvas which will tour youth clubs and public areas. &amp;nbsp;People will be asked to do their part to combat racism by delivering street art which celebrates cultural diversity and contains a strong an anti-racism message.&amp;nbsp;
&amp;nbsp;

The Suitcase Ensemble - Look at Us Now

This is a professional production inspired by childhood dreams, lost glories and the unsung history of the Edge Hill British Rail Brass Band. &amp;nbsp;There will be a programme of participatory opportunities and outreach with local communities, aiming to engage and inspire those with little access to contemporary theatre.
&amp;nbsp;

Urban Revolt Media - Angels With Dirty Faces: Postcode Criminals

This initiative will use photography and moving image to help young people express their feelings and experiences of living on disadvantaged estates. Young people will carry out research, identifying issues affecting their neighbourhood, and expressing them through art works which will be featured by the Bluecoat and NML for the Biennial 2012.
MORE
A healthy boost for community groups &amp;ndash; 2.
&amp;nbsp;

The Sound Agents &amp;ndash; Project Chinatown

A series of radio programme workshops will be carried out in The Black-E and The Wah Sing to train the community on how to write, record, edit and upload programmes to an internet radio station. The workshops will be professionally photographed and will be exhibited at Chinese New Year in the Black-E with a sound work of programmes aired in the Dome.
&amp;nbsp;
Liverpool City Council&amp;rsquo;s Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said:&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Grassroots funding is all about working with smaller organisations to bring the benefits of culture and art to those individuals who may not normally engage with the city&amp;rsquo;s cultural programme.
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;Culture contributes enormously to people&amp;rsquo;s health, and it&amp;rsquo;s essential we work in partnership with the PCT to ensure that the Decade of Health and Wellbeing has a real, positive impact on our communities. This programme gives 34 groups the opportunity to tackle key issues in a creative way, and as a result extend the reach and awareness of the Decade.
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;Our investments will pay dividends in terms of the health, social and personal development of those involved.&amp;rdquo;
&amp;nbsp;
Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool PCT said: &amp;ldquo;We are delighted that so many grassroots organisations are benefiting from the Culture and Wellbeing Grass Roots Grants programme.
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;The grants being made available will provide community organisations with an opportunity to make their own contribution to improving the city&amp;rsquo;s health and wellbeing through culture and the arts. I&amp;rsquo;m sure the projects will make a real difference to those who are involved with them.&amp;rdquo;
&amp;nbsp;
The Culture and Wellbeing Grass Roots Grants programme is the second year of the programme, the first year during the Year of Health and Wellbeing was a huge success with over 60000 people benefiting from over 900 events, large and small.
&amp;nbsp;
Those groups who will be receiving grants are:

<title>Arts & Dementia Showcase & Interactive Workshop , Liverpool </title>
<description>The National Institute for Creative Ageing is a new initiative designed to support artists and develop access to the arts for older people and particularly people with dementia.&amp;nbsp;
Latest event
Arts &amp;amp; Dementia Showcase &amp;amp; Interactive Workshop , Liverpool &amp;ndash; 1 NovemberThe National Institute for Creative Ageing is presenting a day-long introduction to the role the creative arts can play in improving quality of life for people living with dementia.
The day will be an introduction to learning about the dramatic impact the arts can have on people living with dementia, through a series of workshops introduced by creative arts practitioners.
BackgroundOver the past year, the Government has initiated a programme of sweeping changes that will require a seismic shift in the way that the public sector operates.
Outsourcing of service provision from health and social care through a new system of open tenders for both private and public organisations will transform the way in which services will be delivered.
In the field of dementia, underpinned by the National Dementia Strategy, services are being encouraged to focus on their development in the community and thereby reduce the over-reliance on an exclusively medical model of provision. This will happen through the reconfiguration of existing acute services, the establishment of GP commissioning structures, personalised health budgets and other new initiatives.
Accompanying these changes is a major reduction in statutory funding for arts and voluntary sector service provision organisations. Organisations are under pressure to change their structures and adopt new ways of operating so that they can effectively compete within the new emerging market. To successfully manage this change, arts organisations and voluntary sector service providers will have to move away from grant-based operational models to revenue generating operational models of service provision.
The National Institute for Creative Ageing (NICA) will provide expert support in managing this transformation successfully. Our aim is to enable member organisations to re-configure their service provision and to develop sustainable operational models so that they can participate in a wider health economy of provision for people living with dementia.
Our aim is to support, empower and develop artists and to demystify the jargon of the health sector, and build on the excellent work that takes place in care homes and communities every day.NICA will offer artists:Artist to artist connections Guidance &amp;ndash; NICA will offer a range of resources for artists &amp;ndash; online and by phone if appropriate including guidance on funding, templates for contracts etcShowcase &amp;ndash; NICA will offer a range of services to showcase the work of artists online and via events, signposting their activity and creating a &amp;ldquo;shop window&amp;rdquo; for potential employersEducation and development &amp;ndash; for artists new to the field and refreshers and skills sharing for those looking to broaden their skill set.

<title>Festival of Olympic Sports</title>
<description>OLYMPIC fever is hitting Liverpool as some of the city&amp;rsquo;s top sporting heroes gather together for a special FREE event later this month.
&amp;nbsp;
The Festival of Olympic Sports will take place at the Echo Arena Liverpool on Sunday 22 January, with Olympic bronze medallists Steve Smith (High Jump) and Steve Parry (Swimming) joining World gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle, Senior British Gymnastics Champion Hannah Whelan, EU Championship Gold medallist boxer Natasha Jonas and table tennis player Mark Palmer who competed in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.
&amp;nbsp;
The day is packed full with taster sessions and demonstrations which will give people of all ages the chance to try out their volleyball, karate, fencing, judo and handball skills and get them motivated and excited about the Olympics.
&amp;nbsp;
There will also be a chance for visitors to meet the city&amp;rsquo;s past and present athletes and get top tips from them on how to stay fit and find out how they became one of the leading stars in their sport.
&amp;nbsp;
Liverpool city council&amp;rsquo;s cabinet member responsible leisure, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: &amp;ldquo;This free event gives everyone the chance to celebrate the Olympic Games by showcasing the sports we&amp;rsquo;re going to see so much of in July and August.
&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;It&amp;rsquo;s a great family day out, with a whole host of different activities visitors can get involved in and find out about how to get fit but have fun at the same time.&amp;nbsp;

&amp;nbsp;
&amp;ldquo;Liverpool is a city with sport running through its veins and this is a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people to get involved in an activity and hopefully become a future Olympic gold medallist!&amp;rdquo;
&amp;nbsp;
A special opening ceremony at 11am will kick off the celebrations in style and will see 500 youngsters from Liverpool&amp;rsquo;s Music Support Service raise the roof with a fantastic performance. &amp;nbsp;
